{Spotlight} Last Resort by Kate Roth

It’s official. I’m a Kate Roth fangirl. If you haven’t read her books yet, this is a situation you need to correct posthaste. Not only are her books cool and vibey, she writes some of my favorite themes in the romance genre. Honestly, I’m pretty sure the woman sits down at her computer and thinks to herself, “Self? What kind of book would Mo like this time?”

I’m such a fan of her work that I want to celebrate her all week! So check back throughout the week to learn more about Kate’s newest series, as well as a Q&A session so we can all get to know her a little bit better. We’re gonna have a lot of fun!

Kate Roth first won me over with her teacher/student romance in The Low Notes. Then I had some fun with an office romance in Natural Harmony. AND THEN. Then she brought Evan Weston into my life. Where to start with this book? Kate Roth puts a new twist on a familiar storyline with this novel. I thought I knew what I could expect from this story when I read the blurb, but Kate takes you on an unexpected ride throughout these pages.

While Last Resort starts out as a fun and sexy romp, the reader gets a feel that there is more than meets the eye to Evan and Dani. It’s the hidden depth that really held onto me throughout the book. Of course, I enjoyed the entire story immensely, but Kate really grips the reader with that anticipation of what’s underneath.

Her characters are fun, a little quirky, and most of all, REAL. As Dani and Evan’s story evolves, Roth’s writing makes you feel like you are truly experiencing the story, rather than just reading about a series of events. You almost feel as if you’re a guest at Desire Resort (and seriously, how fun would THAT be?!?!?)

Now, as much as I profess my love for Evan, I’ve got to be honest, I didn’t warm up to him right away…I loved his swagger, but I was wary of him. I didn’t understand his motives entirely, and wasn’t sure where we were headed with him. But the journey to Evan-land is SERIOUSLY fun! And once I got there, I didn’t want to leave!

He’s hot, right? Wait til you read some of his dirty-talking ways. YUM. I’m glad I have two kindles, because I needed one to fan myself while reading the love scenes in this book! While poor Dani may have had issues in the bedroom before, once she and Evan get together, things are A-OK! The two of them are COMBUSTIBLE.

I do feel the need to warn you, however, you WILL need your copy of Best Laid Plans after you’re finished with this book. TRUST ME.

Kate Roth takes a fresh and original story, adds a splash of a lively secondary cast, tosses it in a shaker with some tropical paradise, and tops the whole thing off with an umbrella of sensual heat, and you’ve got the fabulous cocktail that is Last Resort. I’m so excited to see where Evan and Dani end up in Best Laid Plans! I know there’s a lot more to their adventure. Check back for my thoughts!

 

Excerpt

Sitting up, I raked a hand through my hair, which had dried into a mess of bedhead waves. The knocking continued and my heart pulsed with excitement knowing deep down it must be Evan. Bouncing over to the door, I looked through the peephole, flinging the door open a little too eagerly when I saw him. Evan’s eyes widened when he saw me and then a wicked grin curled on those lips I pined for.

“I fell asleep,” I said pitifully.

His eyes were gleaming and without saying anything he gave me a long, dragged out once-over. I glanced down at myself and remembered I’d put on the red satin babydoll nightgown to soothe my skin. Seeing the fire that played behind his eyes as he took me in made the fine hairs on my neck stand at attention. He stepped into me just as he had when he came to kiss me solely because he’d wanted a kiss from me. I backed into the room, my teeth sinking into my bottom lip as I watched the hunger grow in his stare.

Evan was still smiling devilishly when he stepped into my space, making me step back. He was leading us in a dance that moved me straight to the bed where he’d already ravaged me time and again. When my calves hit the edge of the bed, I sank down to sit on the rumpled comforter.

“What are we celebrating?” I breathed.

He tugged his shirt over his head and tossed it near the window. I scanned his firm chest and stomach, sun-kissed and flexing with every breath. My eyes grazed the small script tattoo over his heart, but as he traced his finger from the center of my lips down to the meeting of my breasts, I lost interest in his secret for the night. His finger hooked the slight V of the front of my lingerie, dragging it down before letting it pop back into place over my cleavage.

“That outfit,” he replied.
